It's forty years now since polyurethane foam became the material of choice for furniture padding and brought low cost comfortable upholstered furniture to the masses, replacing the much more expensive natural latex or other more expensive and less comfortable alternatives. To begin with there was resistance to the new material from traditionalists, but ultimately as polyurethane foam production grew more widespread, price made the widespread revolutionary use of polyurethane foam happen.
