It's forty years now since polyurethane foam became the material of choice for furniture padding and brought low cost comfortable upholstered furniture to the masses, replacing the much more expensive natural latex or other more expensive and less comfortable alternatives. To begin with there was resistance to the new material from traditionalists, but ultimately as polyurethane foam production grew more widespread, price made the widespread revolutionary use of polyurethane foam happen. This new material now has a huge place in the comfortable seating market.

In those forty years foam density has reduced, the foam has become more durable and the economics of mass production have all fuelled the irresistible rise and rise of this ubiquitous material. The market for foam started being met by the big chemical companies, General Tire, Union Carbide and Dupont to name a few but as the market matured it was, as is so often the American way, smaller entrepreneurs who were most able to meet the increasingly exacting requirements of the furniture industry.

Consisent strides forward have been made in comfort and durability for this important material but increasingly today, safety and environmental concerns have also hold sway. Controls for flammability have been tightened and much research has gone into producing foam with limited environmental impact. These developments mean that furniture based on polyurethane foam can be purchased to day with limited concerns about flammability and the environment.
