The ottoman is an interesting piece of furniture which is easily dismissed a a mere
accessory. The word means a number of things, most commonly we mean a low footstool
of the type accompanying a reclining seat but the word is also used to
mean a low bench, a couch, a divan or a storage box for linen typically used in the bedroom.
The ottoman gets its name from the Ottoman Empire a multi ethnic state that existed froim the
late thirteenth until the early twentieth century. It is an emnpire which has varied in make-up
and influence but it includes modern Turkey and other middle eastern , mediterranean and North African areas.
The word "ottoman" was used to describe furniture items brought back to the West by tourists
or designed to have similar appearance.
An Ottoman is usually associated with its matching chair or sofa. But they make great freestanding pieces as well - with lots of uses. They support as well as offer that extra level of relaxation. Available in attractive charcoal, ebony, chartreuse and more, these ottomans come in leather and fabric textiles. As it ages, leather will change and develop its own special character.
