The ottoman is an interesting piece of furniture which is easily dismissed a a mere accessory. The ottoman gets its name from the Ottoman Empire a multi ethnic state that existed froim the late thirteenth until the early twentieth century. It is an emnpire which has varied in make-up and influence but it includes modern Turkey and other middle eastern , mediterranean and North African areas. The word "ottoman" was used to describe furniture items brought back to the West by tourists or designed to have similar appearance.
